Protocols and Standard Operating Procedures while on Safari
Going on a safari in Tanzania is often a big, and sometimes ‘once in a lifetime’, decision to make. We at Dorobo are committed to making sure that your trip is as safe and enjoyable as possible. While we have always believed the safety of our guests is critical to allow them to fully enjoy and make the most of their experiences on safari, during these uncertain times we have implemented a number of new measures to increase the protection of our clients and staff.
Your main contact person when on safari for any questions or concerns will be your Dorobo guide. They can help answer your questions or contact the relevant authority for you. Some other important points of contact are: Official free call number for Covid-19 related issues: 199 |

Guest Testimonial for Safari in October 2020
"We were looking for an escape from Covid which was safe & fun ..... and found Dorobo Safaris! Away from the Covid Chaos we enjoyed the amazing African wildlife up close & personal and observed behaviour only really accessible on foot.
In 10 days, we visited Oldonyo Sambo Conservation area, Tarangire NP, Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro Crater. All fantastic and quite empty so we saw so much without being distracted with other cars /tourists etc.
The excitement of getting so close to wildlife was complimented with the luxury of having our tent set up on arrival to our mobile camps, with a hot water shower & cold drinks. Everything was organised so well & we really enjoyed the support crew & Masaai hosts/guides. We learnt a lot including that some of our money goes directly to the communities which allowed us to enjoy their lands & support eco tourism & education. We have so many stories, fantastic photos and memories. Every day was special and unique and we were so pleased we chose to travel at this time. Less tourists and more animals around.
Killerai, our guide, was incredibly well educated in the local flora and fauna. He was genuinely passionate about all we saw and we would love to go on another walking safari with him. Everyone we met and who were involved with Dorobo were friendly, kind and respectful to each other and the environment. Dorobo have an excellent reputation in Arusha and really look after many different projects. Highly recommend!! (especially in Covid times)."

While on Safari
Depending on the exact itinerary, while on safari you will generally be with the same guide and vehicle throughout the trip, minimizing your contact with a lot of different people. Guests are requested to come with their own face masks, preferably disposable ones for each day on safari or that are washable, and to observe social distancing of at least one (1) meter. Your guide will be doing the same, and will have their own face mask. If both you and the guide are comfortable with it, you may both agree to remove the face mask when on Safari.
We request that guests bring their own hand sanitizer that meets CDC and WHO recommended alcohol content levels. Guests are also requested to bring their own binoculars to avoid sharing the guide’s.
To avoid the huge quantities of plastic water bottles produced by the safari industry, Dorobo has always provided filtered drinking water from our own borehole located at our headquarters in Arusha. We urge guests to bring their own refillable water bottles. The Tanzanian Government through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, has implemented a number of procedures designed to protect both tourists and local staff. All the accommodation facilities and National Park entry gates will be doing temperature checks, observing social distancing and insisting on hand washing. Your guide will be there to help assist you in showing where this is required. After a while these measures may become tiresome and seem excessive, but they are directives from the Tanzanian Government which we are all required to follow, and so we ask for your patience and understanding. Remember that all these measures have been put into place with everyone’s safety in mind.

Your Vehicle
Your vehicle will undergo a thorough cleaning before your safari that cleans and disinfects everything from the seat covers and cushions to all other contact surfaces. During your safari your guide will clean and disinfect all major contact surfaces including door & window handles, arm rests, electrical sockets, guide books etc., at least once per day.
Your Camp
Our Dorobo camps are all low-impact, private, mobile camps that are only set up for a single client group and then taken down when they leave. If staying in multiple areas, the same camp and camp crew will move and set-up for you in a new area. While this style of camping has a low-impact on the areas that we camp in, it also gives a sense of continuity and allows you to connect and share your safari experience with the same staff throughout. The added bonus is that since you are with the same camp and crew the whole time, it minimizes your contact with many different people. Food for the camps is mostly prepared before-hand in the company kitchens in Arusha. This is a safe environment where staff temperatures are checked daily when they arrive for work, and preventative and control measures are in place, including observing social distancing, frequent hand washing with running water and soap, and wearing of safety gear such as face-masks where appropriate. This is on top of the normal measures taken to make sure your food is prepared in a safe manner. Before being sent on safari, all containers are cleaned and disinfected with an approved sanitizer.
Lodges & Other Camps
Usually during a safari guests will stay in a lodge or luxury tented camp in between the more remote mobile camping. We will always do our best to only advise and book camps and lodges that adhere to best practices for preventive and control measures for Covid-19, as advised by the WHO and the Tanzanian Ministry of Health. However, guests should know that since these are 3rd party bookings, Dorobo has no direct control of their Covid-19 and other safety measures.
We hope you and your families are staying safe and healthy during these uncertain times, and we welcome you back to Tanzania whenever you feel ready.
