The Ruaha/Rungwa ecosystem now ranks as one of the largest protected areas in Tanzania. With the recent addition of the Usangu wetlands to Ruaha National Park and including the surrounding game reserves, over 45,000 sq kms of land are now protected. (The Serengeti by comparison is only 14,800 sq kms) Here is truly a vast wilderness, which one can get lost in. Admittedly, large expanses of this system are characterized by Miombo woodlands, which at times can seem endless and repetitious with few animals to be seen. But even these areas offer wide expansive views and solitude and as you get to know them, many amazing natural history items that can keep one occupied and fascinated – plants, birds, invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians as well as mammal specialties like oribi, roan and sable.
There is no doubt, however that the pulse of life, especially in the dry season, revolves around the rivers and our main trek options follow the river systems. We have great multi day trek options that need a minimum of 3 nights and can be extended to as many as 6 or 7 days. And to delve into the Miombo woodland experience, one can add a few more days for an excursion to the remote Isunkaviula plateau. Spending a few days before or after your walk to game drive in Jongomero or Msembe is highly recommended. The best time of year for Ruaha walking is the dry season from July to September.
